Aglianico is de topdruif uit het zuiden. Ze heeft een donker gekleurde dikke schil. Aglianico loopt vroeg uit, maar rijpt heel laat. Soms kan ze pas in november geoogst worden. Aglianico groeit in een soort halve maan van Napels tot aan Bari. Maar de beste resultaten geeft ze op de vulkanische bodems van Avellino in Campanië en op de Vulture vulkaan in Basilicata.
Hier komen de beste Aglianico wijnen vandaan – de Aglianico del Vulture en de Taurasi – deze wijnen hebben rijke aroma’s van pruim, kers, zwarte peper, groene tabak en chocola. Stevig zuur en een optimale tanninekwaliteit zorgen ervoor dat deze wijnen een welhaast eindeloos leven hebben. De grootste wijnen van Zuid-Italië worden gemaakt van Aglianico.
